ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST AGREE TO THE FIGURE DRAWING CLASS ETIQUETTE CONTRACT.
Beginning with the skull, moving through to the structure of the face and neck muscles, and then on to facial features, this 3-Day Portrait Drawing Intensive will be an in-depth study of portraiture through the process of traditional drawing techniques. We will meet over wine and hors d’oeuvres during our Friday evening session where our instructor, Katelyn
Chapman, will conduct a 2-hour demo with one of our figure models. With great emphasis placed on anatomy and proportions, we will work in layers starting from life-size skull models, then break down key facial muscles and features before we move on to working from live models on our last day together. We will also look at several Master drawings to
learn how to imbue individual likeness and expression onto our subjects. We will experiment with different drawing approaches and mediums including graphite, charcoal, ink, and chalk pastels. This class builds on foundational drawing knowledge and emphasizes the importance of drawing from observation. We will have an hour lunch break in between on both full days. Participants can bring a bag lunch with them, or we can provide a list of nearby restaurants. All materials will be provided except for paper. *
*Recommended paper: 14”x17 to 18”x24” (roughly that size!) pad of Canson Mixed Media Paper – this will hold up well to both wet and dry media. Studenta are more than welcome to bring watercolor paper when we do ink and pastel or charcoal paper when we get into those mediums.
